Year-Round Vegetable Gardening–Nov. 17

I’ll be giving a talk on Year Round Vegetable Gardening on November 17, 12 Noon to 1:30 PM at Ploughshares Nursery in Alameda. You can learn more at www.ploughsharesnursery.com or call them at (510) 898-7811.

Want to have fresh food from your garden all year long? You can certainly do that in the Bay Area, and I will tell you how. Even a very small space can produce enough to enliven your winter and early spring meals. I will be bringing a winter gardening calendar and some recipes to help you use your harvest. I’ll also have copies of Golden Gate Gardening and Wildly Successful Plants for purchase and signing.

Ploughshares Nursery is a nonprofit set up to teach job skills to at-risk individuals. They sell, among other things, food crop plants and native plants. They are located at 2701 Main Street. Check out their website for more information.

Alameda Island, just off of the coast of Oakland, accessible by bridges. is really interesting to explore, with bookstores, coffee houses and restaurants. The town has a small-town feel to it, with detached houses and nice gardens. You might enjoy coming to hear my talk and then exploring the town a bit.

I’m commenting on an article in the S.F. Chronicle on Wednesday, Nov. 7th that was written by Pam Peirce. She wrote about “Help for Hydrangeas” I haven’t been using that name for 2 years. My oldest daughter Shannon died in 2005, and a friend gave me a Hydrangea plant to be a memory of her. I have renamed it SHANDRANGEA!, and always use that name when I see or hear of them. I wasn’t able to get an E-mail address for Pam to give her this story. Maybe someone can forward this to her. If so, thank you VERY MUCH.
    Sincerely, Paula

    11/2/07 Bur Clover:
These burs used to stick to my long-haired cats all the time, and they were hard to remove. Where can one buy cardboard mulch? Is it sold in regular gardening stores?
    Thanks.

    Hi Heidi,
No, you don’t have to buy cardboard for mulch. You can get boxes for free. Find someplace that receives a lot of shipments of stuff in big boxes–such as an office or a store. Bicycle and appliance boxes are nice because they are big and their cardboard is often extra thick, but any will do. Cut them with a matt knife to make flat pieces and to fit into the spaces you want to cover. Overlap the boxes or even double them so weeds can’t grow up between them. For paths, you can cover the cardboard with wood chips (often available for free from a tree service). For places you want to plant, cover the cardboard with purchased soil.
